Car detailing and car polishing are separate services that are frequently booked together in Dubai. Understanding the difference between them helps you specify the right service for your car's condition.

**Car detailing** is a thorough deep clean of the vehicle's interior and exterior. It goes beyond a standard car wash. Exterior detailing includes foam wash, decontamination, clay bar treatment, wheel cleaning, tyre dressing, and glass cleaning. Interior detailing includes vacuuming, steam cleaning of fabric and trim, leather treatment, dashboard cleaning, air vent detailing, and door jamb cleaning. The output is a vehicle that is clean to every surface area.

**Machine polishing** is a paint correction process. It removes or reduces surface defects: swirl marks from automated car washes, light scratches from parking contact, oxidation from UV exposure, and water spots from evaporated hard water. Machine polishing uses an orbital or rotary polisher with a cutting or finishing compound to work through the paint surface defects. A single-stage polish corrects light to medium defects. A two-stage polish (cut, then refine) corrects heavier swirl and scratch damage.

Booked together, a full detail followed by machine polish leaves the car clean at every surface level and with paint that reflects correctly without swirl patterns. Most clients with vehicles older than 12 to 18 months book both together.

Detailing does not include paint correction. If your paintwork shows swirl marks or light scratches, a polish step should be added to the booking.

Hand washing and machine polishing operate on completely different surfaces of the vehicle.

A hand wash cleans the surface of the paint: removing dirt, brake dust, bird droppings, and water spots from the clear coat. A correctly executed hand wash with two buckets and a microfibre mitt produces no new surface scratches and leaves the paint clean. It does not change the condition of the paint itself.

Machine polishing works within the clear coat layer. Paint on modern vehicles is structured as a base coat (the colour) topped with a clear coat (the protective and glossy layer, typically 50 to 100 microns thick). Swirl marks and light scratches sit in the top portion of the clear coat. Machine polishing uses a mechanical cutting action to level the clear coat surface, removing the scratch peaks. The result is paint that reflects light uniformly rather than showing swirl patterns under direct sunlight.

For a car that is mechanically clean but has visible swirl marks in sunlight, machine polishing is the correct intervention. A hand wash will not remove those marks. Conversely, machine polishing a car that is not first properly cleaned risks dragging contamination across the paint surface and introducing new scratches.
