How Often Should You Polish Your Car?

Most car owners overpollish. The reason? Polishing removes material from your clear coat. Each pass is abrasive—it cuts off a microscopic layer to expose fresh paint underneath. In Dubai's intense sun and high temperatures, your clear coat is already under stress. Add frequent polishing on top, and you accelerate its breakdown.

The industry standard used to be "polish twice a year." That was before modern clear coats, climate change, and the UAE's UV index of 8+. Today, that frequency is too aggressive for desert climates.

A Dubai car should be polished no more than once or twice per year, and only when swirl marks or light oxidation justify it. If your paint still looks glossy under direct sunlight, skip the polish. If you can see fine scratches or swirls when you run your hand across the surface, that's your cue.

The timing matters too. Polish in early autumn (October-November) when the summer's UV damage is visible but before winter washdowns. If you're absolutely due for a second session, aim for late spring (April-May) before the peak heat. Never polish in summer—heat speeds up product cure and increases the abrasion risk.

Polishing is not the only culprit. UV rays, salt spray, bird droppings, tree sap, hard water, and sand all attack clear coat. But polishing is the one thing you can control—and the one most people overdo.

Each polish removes about 0.5–1 micron of clear coat (your total clear coat is typically 40–80 microns thick). Do the math: polish four times a year for five years, and you've removed 10–20 microns. That's material you can't put back. According to Koch-Chemie's automotive finishing guide, once your clear coat is compromised, UV has direct access to the base coat and oxidation accelerates exponentially.

The real protection happens between polishes. Proper washing technique matters more than polish frequency. Use the two-bucket method: one bucket with soapy water, one with rinse water. Soak your mitt in the rinse bucket between passes to remove sand and debris. A contaminated mitt is like sanding your paint.

After washing, lock in protection. A quality sealant (ceramic or polymer-based) lasts 3-6 months and requires no abrasion—it bonds chemically to your clear coat. For Dubai cars, we recommend ceramic coating over frequent polishing. A ceramic layer adds protection without the material loss of polishing, and lasts 1-3 years depending on the formula.

Polishing isn't forbidden—it's just the exception, not the rule. You need polishing when:

• Swirl marks are visible under direct sunlight and won't wash out • Light oxidation has dulled the finish (looks like fine fog) • Paint contamination (tar, overspray) won't budge with clay bar treatment • You're preparing for paint protection film or ceramic coating (a single pre-treatment polish ensures adhesion)

According to 3M's automotive care standards, pre-treatment polishing is the industry best practice for maximizing adhesion of protective coatings. If none of these conditions apply, your car doesn't need polishing. A sealant refresh or ceramic coating touch-up is usually enough.
